Grantee Profile
Great River Shakespeare Festival
Now entering its fourth season, the Great River Shakespeare Festival (GRSF) presents two of the Bard's plays each summer at the performing arts center of Winona State University.
Founded in Winona by a group of seasoned theater professionals from across the country, GRSF has become part of the fabric of Winona community life and looms large in the community's future plans. In the company of similar regional theaters throughout the state, GRSF prides itself on providing rural Minnesota with access to professional theater.
GRSF has also developed a full repertoire of outreach and education programs that complement its mainstage shows. Programs include classes, workshops, and demonstrations with the local high schools, senior populations, and businesses; pre-play morning events at coffeehouses; exhibitions of local artists in their lobby; radio events; and a large cadre of volunteers called the "Friends of Will."
McKnight's support of GRSF showcases one of the guiding principles of our arts funding: to make high-quality art accessible to as many people as possible, whether they live in a bustling urban center or in a quiet rural town.
