Grantee Profile

North House Folk School

Located in Grand Marais, the North House Folk School (NHFS) offers courses in "traditional northern crafts." This includes many of the folk traditions of Scandinavian cultures, but also Ojibwa and other northern tribal cultures, and craft and art traditions from the northern sections of Asia.

Founded in 1997—when the first series of crafts classes was launched—NHFS has been growing in size and dimension over the past 10 years, and now offers literally hundreds of classes year-round, from Antler Basketry to Wooden Bowl Turning.

With help from the City of Grand Marais, the surrounding community, and the support of The McKnight Foundation, North House Folk School functions as a true community cultural center, and adds a unique dimension to an already artistically focused community. NHFS is dedicated to enriching lives and building community and has become a cultural and economic engine on the north shore.
