Grantee Profile
The Playwrights' Center
Founded in 1971 by five playwrights looking for support in the creation of their work, The Playwrights' Center (PWC) was conceived as a place where writers could have the rare opportunity to hear their work read aloud by professional actors; to solicit comments and criticism from peers and audience members; and to develop their scripts with the help of artistic collaborators and working professionals.
Over its 35-year existence, PWC has grown into a regional and national resource for script development, providing a range of services for writers at all stages of their careers, including readings, workshops, residencies, fellowships, grants, and career information.
In addition, it offers groundbreaking programs like New Plays on Campus, which filters scripts to college drama departments hungry for new work, and PlayLabs, one of the nation's most celebrated annual festivals of new work.
PWCwhich also administers McKnight's annual theater artists and playwrights fellowshipsis truly a national model for service to playwrights.
