Grantee Profile
The Rose Ensemble
This 12-member vocal group specializes in performances of ancient choral music composed between about the 11th and 17th centuries. Choral music of this timewhen there was virtually no difference between sacred music and popular or folk musictold stories of saints and folk heroes, either sparsely arranged or completely unaccompanied.
The group has interpreted and performed manuscripts that have been hidden for hundreds of years. A recent season included a performance of an unearthed French manuscript celebrating St. Martin of Tours; a Mexican baroque Christmas concert; a candlelight performance of Renaissance Lenten music coupled with new pieces by a composer in residence; and The Dublin Mystery Play, a medieval drama about Easter morning, in collaboration with the Southern Theater and a local dance company.
Rose Ensemble plays a leading role among music scholars and performers, thanks to the extremely high quality of its work and an abiding commitment to reaching new ears and minds.
