Center for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development

Improving Livelihoods

Many coastal fishing communities in Vietnam are facing serious challenges. Increasing population, intensification of small-scale commercial aquaculture, and unsustainable fishing practices are putting great pressure on aquatic resources. The Center for Marinelife Conservation and Community Development (MCD) is part of the increasingly vibrant local NGO sector in Vietnam. MCD promotes sustainable fishing methods and coastal conservation to protect and improve the livelihoods of fishing-dependent coastal communities. Working with local institutions, MCD has promoted fisheries conservation practices and eco-tourism to create alternative income sources for impoverished villagers. Together, these strategies relieve pressure on the limited aquatic resources.

As a result of the conservation education and community-based fishing regulations stimulated by this project, over 2,000 fishing families in two coastal provinces will participate in eco-business activities, and several thousand more will better protect and manage their coastal fishery resources.
