St. Jude's Family Projects and Training Centre
Small and Sustainable
Women farmers in rural Uganda typically have just one to three acres of land to work. St. Jude's shows how much can be done with a small parcel. St. Jude Family Projects and Training Centre was established in 1990, when a couple named John and Josephine Kizza used their savings to create an intensive, integrated, sustainable organic farm on 3.7 acres. The farm generates increased yields at reduced costs by using modern principles of sustainable agriculture, including organic fertilization, improved seeds and breeds, and recycling of wastes.
The farm is an inspiration for small homesteads. Its success has strongly influenced rural farming, especially in the Masaka and Rakai districts near where the Kizzas farm. The couple has organized 300 rural farmers, primarily single mothers and widows, into 15 self-help training groups to learn the St. Jude's approach. Demand led the Kizzas to offer a basic rural training center on their farm that, in 1996, trained 15,000 people. Local interest is strong, demonstrating the will and skill of rural farmers to better their knowledge and standard of living.
