Arts funding to benefit state's metro, northwest arts funding collaborative to cover two state areas
January 14, 2008 - Graydon Royce, Star Tribune. The new program pledges $1.85 million to arts groups over three years.
Five major arts funders have announced a program to distribute $1.85 million over three years. ArtsLab would grant the money to 16 small institutions within two distinct regions of Minnesota: the seven-county metro area and 26 counties in the state's northwestern quarter.
Philosophically, the funders believe arts can play a significant role in community development. The program intends to focus on building the organizational capacity of smaller arts groups, which fosters stability and helps stir the talent pool for future leadership.
The collaborative consists of the Bush, F.R. Bigelow, Mardag, McKnight, and St. Paul foundations. Money will be issued to eight groups in northwest Minnesota with annual budgets of $20,000 to $135,000, as well as to eight groups in the metro area with budgets of $75,000 to $400,000.
ArtsLab expects to release guidelines and seek applications in May and select the winners by late summer. The program is being administered through Arts Midwest, a Minneapolis-based organization.
