Nexus Community Partners
In 1994, we joined "Living Cities"-a coalition of 15 other private foundations and financial institutions around the country, as well as the federal HUD and HHS, that joined forces to strengthen urban neighborhoods. In the past two years, four cities have been selected by the group to test the idea of harnessing the energy, expertise, and financial muscle of multiple foundation and lenders to focus on a few specific projects.
The Twin Cities is one of those four cities, and along with the James L. Knight Foundation, McKnight has led the planning of a project that aims to revitalize two aging urban commercial corridors here-Payne Avenue in St. Paul and Lake Street in Minneapolis. Officially launched in early 2004, Nexus Community Partners is building on the energetic revitalization efforts already underway by a new generation of immigrants who have settled and started small businesses in these two areas.
