When the people from the McKnight Foundation called Bain Boehlke, they told him they wanted to come for a visit to talk about some changes with the foundation's grant structure. But they arrived with a more pleasant surprise: the news that the Jungle Theater artistic director had won the foundation's $50,000 Distinguished Artist Award.

"I couldn't talk. I just sobbed," the 69-year-old actor, director and designer said. "People think that, because you're in the theater, you get all this attention. But you really don't, especially if you're working as a director or designer...
