The McKnight Foundation will honor 44 artists and ensembles selected for 2006-2007 McKnight artist fellowships and residencies at a private reception in August. McKnight's is the largest geographically focused arts fellowship program in the country, providing fellowships of $25,000 per year to Minnesota artists.

"The well-being of Minnesota's vibrant arts community depends on the ideas, passion, and commitment of our individual artists," said Erika L. Binger, McKnight board chair. "Artists need unfettered creative time to make their contributions. The artist fellowship program allows them to set aside time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration. We hope these funds will also give them the freedom to take advantage of opportunities and to work on new projects."

A complete list of fellows and national artists in residence is below.

ARTIST FELLOWSHIPS

Including this year's awards, the Foundation has funded over 1,300 artist fellowships since 1982. McKnight currently gives about $1.7 million per year to support fellowship programs run by nonprofit arts organizations representing 12 media.

Fellowships are administered by the American Composers Forum (composers), IFP Minnesota (screenwriters and filmmakers), the Loft (writers), MacPhail Center for Music (musicians), Minneapolis College of Art and Design (visual artists), Minnesota Center for Photography (photographers), Northern Clay Center (ceramic artists), Playwrights' Center (playwrights and theater artists), and Southern Theater (choreographers and dancers).
