A esclerose lateral amiotr\u00f3fica (ELA) \u00e9 uma doen\u00e7a neurodegenerativa fatal, caracterizada pela perda progressiva de neur\u00f4nios motores e fraqueza muscular. Formas heredit\u00e1rias de ELA est\u00e3o frequentemente associadas a expans\u00f5es anormais de sequ\u00eancias curtas de DNA \u2014 conhecidas como repeti\u00e7\u00f5es curtas em tandem (STRs) \u2014 no gene C9orf72.
