“We are immensely grateful to Elizabeth for how she has shaped McKnight over 12 years, knowing her impact on our mission and team will continue well into the future as the Foundation remains sharply focused on the power of our endowment to drive change.”– TONYA ALLEN, PRESIDENT
After more than 12 years of committed service to the McKnight Foundation, Elizabeth McGeveran will step down from her role as Vice President of Investments this June.
In her tenure at McKnight, McGeveran led the transformation of the Foundation’s endowment from a traditional financial asset into a mission-aligned engine that actively advances McKnight’s goals through its growth and the holdings themselves. As McKnight’s inaugural Vice President of Investments, she built our in-house investment team and led the development of an integrated approach that has resulted in half of the endowment being mission aligned today.
“Elizabeth’s impact at McKnight and on the field of mission investing has been significant. She has demonstrated what is possible when you invest in a stronger future and how endowments can be leveraged as powerful tools for social and environmental change,” shares president Tonya Allen. “We are immensely grateful to Elizabeth for how she has shaped McKnight over 12 years, knowing her impact on our mission and team will continue well into the future as the Foundation remains sharply focused on the power of our endowment to drive change.”

McGeveran played a central role in positioning McKnight among the first foundations in the country to commit its entire portfolio to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, translating that ambition into actionable investment policy, portfolio construction, and manager expectations. She actively contributed to McKnight’s historic All In On Mission effort—resulting in back-to-back years of the highest charitable payouts in the Foundation’s history—while maintaining strong financial performance through disciplined stewardship of the endowment.
Under her leadership, McKnight developed a dedicated portfolio, now totaling roughly $500 million, invested in renewable energy infrastructure, technologies and companies that address social and environmental challenges. This strategy positions the Foundation to both contribute to and benefit from the global energy transition. Her work has demonstrated, in practice, that institutional capital can deliver strong returns while advancing climate solutions and expanding opportunity.
“The decision to move on comes from a place of deep care for McKnight, our people, and our mission—and immense pride in all we have accomplished together,” says Elizabeth McGeveran. “At this stage in my career, I am ready for more flexible work that allows me to bring my expertise to a broader range of commercial and nonprofit organizations working to align capital with climate solutions and more equitable economies.”
We celebrate Elizabeth and thank her as she moves into this next chapter.
