“When young creators sit at the same table as farmers—walking fields, tasting foods, listening to elders—they don’t just document agroecology, they translate it for millions.”– JANE MALAND CADY, PROGRAM DIRECTOR, GLOBAL COLLABORATION FOR RESILIENT FOOD SYSTEMS, MCKNIGHT FOUNDATION
Across Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador, many farmers are advancing agroecological practices that protect biodiversity, nourish communities, and care for the land. Yet their stories often remain close to home. To help share these experiences with wider audiences, the Andes Agroecológicos project brought together 12 prominent content creators from the region for an immersive look at agroecology in the Andes.
The initiative—led by the Institute for Rural Development in South America (IPDRS) in partnership with the McKnight Foundation—connects creators with farmers, markets, and local food systems across the three countries. By learning directly from producers, creators can better understand both the challenges and the achievements of people who grow healthy food and steward the environment. Their videos, photos, and posts help highlight these lessons and strengthen the link between rural communities and the digital world.
Participants, selected based on their locations, followers, interests, and themes in their content, include El Mapache Viajero, Kaplex, Belmont, and Darsha from Bolivia; David Bustamante, David Valle, Ana Cristina López, and Nancy Marisol Pujlla from Ecuador; and Deysi Aldava, Soledad Secca Noa, Joel Fuentes Cruz, and Yeni Llamocca Lima from Peru. Together, they’re exploring new ways of engaging audiences who increasingly learn about the world through social media and TikTok.
“Andes Agroecológicos has been an innovation lab for culture change,” shared Jane Maland Cady, program director for McKnight’s Global Collaboration for Resilient Food Systems. “When young creators sit at the same table as farmers—walking fields, tasting foods, listening to elders—they don’t just document agroecology, they translate it for millions. That’s how we shift what people value: making rural leadership visible, making healthy food aspirational, and connecting the wisdom of the Andes to the everyday choices local people make.”

Mariana Alem, who leads Andes Agroecológicos for IPDRS, describes the vision this way:
“The project brought together 12 content creators from Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador and took them on trips to each of the three countries to have shared experiences with agroecology. We spoke with farmers and consumers, visited fairs and markets, and learned about toxic levels of agrochemical residues on food. The main objective of this experience is to help agroecology grow by reaching millions of people who can see and hear these content creators and be inspired by their creative stories. We also want to see how this experience will influence the creators themselves: in their consumption habits, buying habits, eating habits, their content, and whether it can somehow influence their audiences. Another goal is educating people about how eating food with agrochemical residues has harmful effects on their health. Sharing this information and opening people’s eyes makes us believe we can help increase the demand for healthier, chemical‑free foods.”
Claire Nicklin, the Andes Community of Practice Regional Representative with McKnight Foundation based in Quito, Ecuador, has worked closely with Mariana on the project, and has seen firsthand the impact of the effort. “Culture shifts when the right messengers meet the right teachers. This project is influencing local young people to either continue farming or to consider farming and rural life in new ways,” Claire shared. “These creators are helping youth see agroecology—and the farmers behind it—as the future. By linking rural wisdom with digital reach, efforts like this one can truly change what a generation values.”

Learning across three countries
As part of the Andes Agroecológicos learning journey, the 12 content creators traveled together to Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru. Each trip offered a different window into agroecology—how communities are practicing it, adapting it, and advocating for healthier food systems.

Bolivia – Learning from diversified, ancestral production: The creators spent time with families in the highlands and valleys of Bolivia. They learned about the country’s rich, diversified agroecological production—from quinoa and lupin to potatoes, vegetables, and fruits. Visits around the Uyuni salt flat and Lake Titicaca highlighted how farmers use bioindicators and local innovations to understand the health of their soils and ecosystems. These conversations revealed the depth of ancestral knowledge that continues to guide sustainable production today.

Peru – Connecting agroecology and gastronomy: The team traveled through Lima, Pachacamac, and the Mantaro Valley. In Peru, they explored the powerful connection between agroecology and gastronomy—how chefs, farmers, and organizations work together to elevate native foods and sustainable growing practices. They witnessed peasant strategies for producing potatoes and forage in ways that care for the land, and they learned how communities organize to monitor agrochemical residues and advocate for safer food. The trip also gave creators a firsthand look at how marketing and storytelling help bring these products to urban consumers.

Ecuador – Exploring models of production: The group visited Quito, Alaquez, Píllaro, Salcedo, and Tumbaco. There, they learned about the differences between conventional agriculture and the agroecological approaches practiced by local organizations. They met with producer groups advancing sustainable strategies, saw how communities monitor agrochemical residues in food, and learned about citizen initiatives that promote healthier production. Throughout the week, creators documented farmers’ ingenuity, local markets, and the policy efforts shaping food system change in the country.

What creators saw, learned, and carried home
Across their visits to Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, the content creators brought curiosity, humility, and an eagerness to learn from the communities they met. The experience left a deep impression—not only expanding their understanding of agroecology, but also strengthening their appreciation for the knowledge and leadership of rural people.
For Ecuadorian creator David Valle, the trip was a reminder that agroecology is rooted in the wisdom of earlier generations.
“I’ve learned so much about agroecology on this trip. It’s a practice that comes from our ancestors. We forget what’s most important: Mother Earth, who gives us food. Agroecology highlights this.” He shared how inspired he felt by the farmers they visited—for their care for the soil, their use of bioindicators, and their respect for the land. “I’m extremely happy with this trip; I’ve learned so much. It’s an honor to learn from the knowledge and wisdom of these communities.”
Peruvian creator Daisy Aldava felt something similar as she traveled through her country’s coastal and Andean regions. What moved her most was the way communities blend ancestral and contemporary knowledge in service of healthier food systems.
“I am very excited to see these wonderful places where Mother Earth is respected, where communities respect each other, share information, and combine current knowledge with the wisdom of our ancestors. They produce high‑quality organic products, and that impressed me a lot.”
In Bolivia, creators experienced the breadth of agrobiodiversity and the strength of community networks across the highlands and valleys. Bolivian creator Andrés Claros (Mapache Viajero) said the journey transformed how he sees agroecology.
“I now see it as the combination of ancestral knowledge and modern techniques. Inspiring to see how these people adopt new things without abandoning their ancestral knowledge.” What stayed with him was not only the practices he observed, but also the welcome he received. “The warmth with which they welcomed us is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Peruvian creator Soledad Seca—who grew up in a Quechua farming community—shared how the trip deepened her understanding of agrobiodiversity and the essential role of community leadership.
“Before this trip, my concept of agrobiodiversity was mostly about organic cultivation. Through the visits we’ve had, I’ve seen how important organization is, and how essential the role of young people is when they work hand in hand with elders.” She was especially struck by how farmers nourish communities and uphold food sovereignty. “We need to ensure good nutrition for our children. That’s the role communities play: they are the foundation.”
For Bolivian creator Cristian René Ach Huanca, the experience opened an entirely new view of agriculture and the value of ecological practices.
“My perception of agroecology and agriculture has changed completely. At first, I didn’t know much, but now I understand everything: soil management, fertilizer management, pest control.” He was moved by how communities share knowledge across long distances—such as the pachagrama system used throughout the region for farmers to record agro-climatic information to develop local weather forecasts—and by the taste and integrity of agroecologically-produced foods. “The products are natural and organic—no chemicals. The difference in taste is noticeable.”
Across all three countries, creators described a sense of gratitude—for the farmers who welcomed them, for the teachings they received, and for the responsibility they now feel to share these stories with their audiences. Their reflections point to the power of local voices to make agroecology visible, understandable, and inspiring to millions of people who encounter it through digital platforms.
